Worcester Webster Square Fire Station

About

Location: Worcester, MA
Size: 15,000 sq. ft.

This new, state of the art firefighting facility stands on the site of a fire station built in 1893 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The facility was worthy of restoration, but in a state of serious disrepair. Even the hope of saving its handsome façade faded when we discovered that the construction of the exterior walls would not support partial demolition. As a result, we designed a 15,000 square foot replacement for the 7,000 sq. ft. station. The new station uses the same palette of materials as its predecessor - slate, yellow brick, and granite - and is designed to celebrate the memory of the original station in a meaningful way, standing as a symbol of civic pride in Massachusetts' second largest city.
