Highland Fire Station Restoration
After completing a Space Needs Analysis and Master plan for two of Arlington’s three Fire Stations, D&S was hired to design and oversee construction of the Highland Station and the exterior repairs to the Central Station. Both stations are listed on the Historic Register and required careful planning with the Town’s Historical Commission. Highland Station hadn't been updated since its construction in the 19th century. Our firm worked tirelessly to retain the structure’s historical character while incorporating repairs to the historic facade, upgrades to the mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems and allowing for the non-operable apparatus bay to fit contemporary fire trucks. The newly renovated station includes a state of the art fitness center and training classroom, a spacious cooking area with commercial appliances and a number of skylights, improved living quarters with single occupancy dormitories, and a new emergency generator that runs on natural gas.
